Surf’s Up: Solo trip to the surfing capital of the north:
San Juan, La union is known as the surfing capital of the north. Here you can experience the surfer’s life style. It’s a great area for beginners and seasoned surfers. There were no waves during the morning so I waited until late afternoon. Surf board rentals costs 200 Php and 200 Php for the instructor’s fee, if you already know how to surf, you can just rent a surf board. My first surfing experience was great, I hoped for bigger waves but maybe next time. Aside from surfing you can also swim, rent a paddle board or a canoe and enjoy the beach.
There are many restaurants around so you won’t go hungry. For accommodations, you can choose from hotels to hostels depending on your budget and preference. I stayed at Circle hostel, it is a great choice if you’re traveling alone or want to save on accommodation. A bed cost 550 Php while hammocks cost 450 Php a night. Another famous attraction is Tangadan Falls in San Gabriel, La Union. If your into hiking and cliff diving this side trip is for you, read my Tangadan Falls post here.

Coming from Manila you can ride a Partas Bus bound for Vigan or Laoag. Inform the conductor to drop you in Urbiztondo San Juan, La union. They will drop you right in front of the beach resorts, and it’s just a few steps away from the beach front. The fare is around 380 Php. Travel time is 6-7 hours depending on the traffic.
