Sunrise at Mt. Jumbo, La Trinidad, Benguet
Mt. Jumbo or Mt. Yangbew (official name) is a great place to watch the beautiful sunrise or sunset in La Trinidad, Benguet. Mt. Jumbo is in the town of La Trinidad at Barangay Tawang. From the top of the mountain, you can view the beautiful mountains of Benguet, La Trinidad valley and some parts of Baguio city.
My brother, sister and I woke up around 4 am to try to catch the sunrise. We asked our dad to drive us to Tawang, but you can also reach it via public jeepney. Based what we know the trail to the summit starts near the elementary school, we asked a store keeper and he directed us where the trail starts.
The trail was quite easy, you’ll be walking on paved road for the first few meters. The weather was good, and I was confident that we can view the sunrise. It was perfect timing, as we reached the summit the sun has started to rise. The view on top was truly breath-taking. Most people consider it as mini Mt. Pulag, probably it resembles Pulag’s summit with its hilly grass land. It was a great hike and we enjoyed the view on top immensely.
So we decided to start our trek back , unfortunately we took the wrong path. I guess its part of the adventure, we got lost but we were able to find our way back to the main highway. Hope to watch the sunset and spend a night in Mt. jumbo in the future.
How to get to Mt. Jumbo / Mt. Yangbew:
If you’re coming from Baguio, ride a jeep bound for Tomay, La Trinidad. Asked the driver to drop you at the intersection going to Barangay Tawang. You should see a signboard of La Trinidad National highschool at the entrance of the intersection. Walk and you should pass by the Tawang Stone church, the trail going to the summit starts near the Tawang Elementary School.
There is also a jeepney at KM.4 (Pines Park) going to Tawang just tell the driver that you will get off at Sitio Banig. Alternatively you can just take a cab.
There is a 25 PHP fee, so don’t be surprise when someone approach you and ask for a fee and register. Ther are no shaded area in the summit so it could be really hot at noon.
